UNITED WAY’S DAY OF CARING VOLUNTEERS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE AT THE HAUBERG ESTATE
Rock Island, IL, September 20, 2019 – Yesterday’s “Day of Caring” by the United Way of the Quad Cities volunteers brought excitement, hard work and results to the Hauberg Estate in Rock Island, IL. With approximately 160 hard-working volunteers pitching in, the entire estate received attention.
Thanks to the dozens of volunteers who toiled away in the Terraced Garden, the land is nearly ready for planting fruit trees (apple, pear, quince and cherry) in the Spring in phase 1 restoration of the original Jens Jensen landscape plan.
Students from Rock Island High School worked in the forest clearing pond areas of rumble. Dozens of volunteers cleared brush and trees making pathways more accessible for visitors.
The formal gardens were weeded, planted for Fall and prepared for Winter. So much was accomplished that work also began on the Carriage House to clear and prepare it for restoration.
The “big reveal” of the day was when nearly 50 employees of John Deere, Bitco Insurance and Yes We CAN wielded sledge hammers and formed a relay brigade as they removed the crumbling asphalt from the curving walkway and revealed the red brick of the original driving path underneath.
Todd Linscott, chairman of the Friends of Hauberg Civic Center Foundation board of directors noted, “The community support and enthusiasm has been wonderful. We would never have been able to accomplish everything that was done today without United Way of the Quad Cities and these amazing volunteers.”
According to Deb Kuntzi, Executive Director, “The Hauberg Estate is an example of a successful public-private partnership. The City of Rock Island partnering with the community through the Friends of Hauberg Civic Center Foundation, local United Way of the Quad Cities partnering through their wonderful Day of Caring program and businesses participating with dedicated volunteers. This is truly a perfect collaboration.”
The Friends of Hauberg Civic Center Foundation is a 501(c) (3) organized for charitable and educational purposes to oversee the preservation and sustainability of the Hauberg Estate, Mansion and Gardens.
