Formal Rose Garden

Susanne’s Rose Garden

Susanne Denkmann-Hauberg, like many women of her era, wanted a Formal Rose Garden. This was not a favorite feature of her landscape architect, Jens Jensen. His designs featured the prairie style and native plants. He did not like formal rose gardens, but did what his customer wanted, hesitantly!

The restoration of the Formal Rose Garden will give us a unique and beautiful new wedding venue. The garden will accommodate 50 to 75 people in an intimate setting. Imagine the ceremony under the pergola and guests seated on the lawn area. The bride will enter from the brick walkway among the mainly French roses of 1910 and older varieties.

The hardscape in the Formal Rose Garden is just as amazing as the beautiful roses and flowers. In fact, the garden hardscape is a bigger and more complicated project. One of the challenges is finding the original brick for the pillars of the arbor.  The Norman bricks are bigger than the Roman bricks more commonly used throughout the estate. Friends of Hauberg Civic Center Foundation board member, Roy Smith and his wife Jane, found five of the original tulip molds at a garage sale 15 years ago and they were sitting in their garage. The tulip molds will be done locally by Corey Wallace. They were made to look like Pompeiian stone.

The Formal Rose Garden is an exciting and huge project for the Friends of Hauberg to undertake. If you’d like to participate in creating this amazing garden, please give us a call at 309-373-5080. If you’d like to make a donation, checks can be mailed to: Hauberg Estate, 1300 24th Street, Rock Island, IL 61201.

Each rose will be planted with a personalized marker, your name will be included on a special Jens Jensen landscape plan, and you may choose the spot for your rose to be planted.
