The Hauberg Estate has graced Rock Island, Illinois for over a century. Referred to as an undiscovered hidden jewel, it fell into disrepair. When awareness of the possible loss of this local treasure was made known, the community rallied and fought to preserve the mansion and gardens.
The Friends of Hauberg Civic Center Foundation was formed in 2016 for the purpose of restoring, maintaining and operating the landmarked, historic property. And the work began. Through donations and volunteer efforts the general maintenance and repairs have been undertaken. But there’s still more to do.
The Terraced Garden is ready for restoration with an educational program for school-aged children teaching them the “how to” and benefits of growing fruits and vegetables. Volunteers have already begun cleaning, clearing and preparing the terraces.
Stained Glass Window Restoration will be a long-term undertaking to restore the 122 beautiful windows in the Hauberg Mansion. Deterioration has created air leaks and bowing of the glass. Experts inspected the windows and vintage glass materials have been found.
The Formal Rose Garden restoration is also currently underway. Initial grading has taken place, bricks for the sidewalks are delivered and tulip motifs are in development. Springtime planting is on the horizon and fundraising is underway for the restoration and rebuilding of the Villa Arch at the rose garden entrance.
