STEAM ON WHEELS
This year the “STEAM ON WHEELS” program is being presented at the Hauberg Estate. STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) is an educational approach to learning and promotes problem solving, creative and analytical thinking. According to STEAM’s director Sam McCullum, “Our goal is to inspire future generations with hands-on experiences and skill development.”
The Moline Foundation awarded the Friends of Hauberg a grant to assist with the STEAM educational classroom being renovated in the Carriage House on the estate. Thanks to this generous funding, classes will be able to get underway quickly to provide unique learning opportunities to our local youth.

The Director’s Desk
As we start a new year, it’s the perfect time to say thank you to the many Friends of Hauberg members, donors, volunteers, city partners and the Quad Cities community.
The Hauberg Estate has come alive over the past few years with your contributions and hard work. So please stop by and see the results more than 3,000 volunteer hours have made on the property and in the mansion.
A new benefit to our Friends is our association with the American Horticulture Society’s, Reciprocal Admissions Program. We are proud to announce our 10-acre historical garden property begins this affiliation in 2020. A current Friends of Hauberg member card entitles the named Friend special admission privileges and discounts at 330+ gardens throughout North America. A list of AHS-RAP members can be found at: ahsgardening.org.
This year we’ll be expanding our existing garden projects, renovating the Carriage House and starting new programs. So check our website at: haubergestate.org to stay informed on what’s happening at the Hauberg.
We wish you all a Happy and Healthy 2020!

An Historical Perspective
Catherine Denkman Hauberg Sweeney
Susanne and John Hauberg had their first child, Catherine Denkman Hauberg, in 1914, in Rock Island, Illinois. As a child, Catherine memorized the names of the trees, birds and wildflowers surrounding the Hauberg Estate. The quiet girl possessed a sense of curiosity and adventure that lead her to become a patron of education, exploration, art, science and plant conservation.
Catherine earned a degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before studying zoology at the University of Arizona. She later married Edward C. Sweeney and they raised two daughters and three sons.
In 1963, Catherine purchased The Kampong tropical gardens in Florida, saving the amazing gardens from residential development. She lived at The Kampong until her death in 1995. Much like her parents, Catherine’s legacy is one of helping people and saving places.

Around the Gardens
They say a picture’s worth a thousand words. Here’s what was accomplished around the Hauberg Estate property in 2019.
The Goals for 2020 include
Complete tree clearing and grading of the Terraced Garden.
Develop sustainable rainwater retention plans using existing storm water system.
Develop cultivar list for the Terraced Food Gardens.
Develop more STEAM Based Partnerships to increase use of the gardens.
Rebuild the lower Pond control system, fix lower berm and complete down tree removal.
Finish replanting around the upper lawn near the Carriage House and front Driveway corner of the Estate.
If you would like to volunteer your time, services or make donations toward these efforts please contact us at: director@haubergestate.org.
Maintaining the Magnificent Mansion
When touring the mansion’s second floor, you can’t help but notice the architectural beauty and warm, inviting interior design restored last year. The 2019 accomplishments included restoring the original honey oak wood floors throughout. All the trim woodwork and the servant’s hallway have been painted with historic colors. Catherine’s bedroom has been restored to the striking robin’s egg blue and cream original colors. Across the hall, Johnny’s bedroom was custom mixed to create Hauberg Sage to match the color of his boyhood years.
Plans are already underway for 2020 with the renovation of the kitchen and butler’s pantry floors, walls and glass cupboards scheduled to begin in January.
The Horizon Room sunroom and the sleeping porch off the master bedroom are also slated for historic paint renovation along with window exteriors throughout the mansion. Electrical service has been updated from the Carriage House to the Mansion.
And finally, the historic museum space is ready to begin in the large servant’s area bedroom with paint, replacing millwork and lights for the hallway. This restoration will allow us to share not only the beauty of the Hauberg Estate, but the history.
