Hauberg Estate Newsletter For July – September

A Self-Guided Virtual Tour
of the Hauberg Mansion

The Hauberg Estate has always been fortunate to have active, engaged Friends and Volunteers.   Recently, Alex Wolking, a Chicago realtor born and raised in Rock Island, also on the board of directors of Landmarks Illinois, visited the mansion to see how we were faring during this time. He mentioned a company that does 3D videos and offered to underwrite one for Friends of Hauberg. As you will see when you check out the finished  3D Virtual Tour on our website at www.haubergestate.org, it’s a beautiful, self-guided exploration of the first and second floors of the mansion.

The interactive tour allows the viewer to examine floorplans and view the 3D image of the mansion referred to as a “dollhouse” to plan your tour. You can take your time and look at areas up-close as you see the Mansion from a new perspective. Enter the link below in your browser to view the self-guided tour:

A big thank you to Alex for providing such a fabulous 3D Virtual Tour and for being such a great Friend of Hauberg.

Director’s Desk

It has been a very long few months for everyone and we have missed seeing all of you at the Hauberg Estate. Plans and protocols have been put into place as we begin re-opening the Hauberg following CDC and Illinois State Guidelines. Please check out the COVID-19 Rental Guidelines on our website www.haubergestate.org for details.

And while we have sorely missed hosting your events, working with our volunteers, tours and special events, we have been busy making sure the Hauberg shines and is ready to make your events safe and enjoyable.

Now that we can re-open, it’s time to let you know Volunteers are welcome and greatly needed in many areas. Whether your interest is in gardening, restoration or historic areas, we appreciate any and all community support. Just give us a call at 309-373-5080 or email director@haubergestate.org and let us know of your individual, or group, interest.

So please, stay safe and stay healthy as we move forward re-opening the Hauberg Estate. I look forward to welcoming you home to the Hauberg.

Flowers, Treasure Hunts and More!

The Hauberg’s believed we can connect to nature even in our own yards, so they wanted the land surrounding their home to be a living landscape. They used plants native to the prairie lands in Illinois and combined these with some of their favorite flowers, trees and bushes. Walk through and enjoy the gardens and grounds, and as you do, be on the lookout for treasures

Some bits of the old landscape are still there. Find the steps and verandas of the terrace garden, the cement foundation squares for the grape arbor, the bridge, the letter H on a pillar and a lamppost that looks like a tree.

There are SIX stones painted with tulip designs from the interior of the house that are hidden throughout the grounds. See if you can find all six.

There are also small rocks painted with native plants hidden throughout the grounds. If you find one, try to identify the plant, take a picture and share it via your favorite social media with #HaubergMansionRocks! Then hide it somewhere else on the grounds for another person to find.  Please do not take the rocks, but you are welcome to hide them again so other people can enjoy.  Printed copies of the Treasure Hunt will be on the front porch in a wooden box. Please feel free to grab one and enjoy the hunt!

Architectural Tours
Find Beauty Inside and Out

We all know Hauberg Estate has really beautiful architecture inside the mansion, but did you ever look at the outside and think what is this, stone or brick? Why are these hooks still there?

Linda Anderson, local historian, FOHCC board member and the individual who landmarked Hauberg, will give a guided architectural tour of the outside of the Hauberg Estate every Thursday evening at 7:00 pm starting on July 2nd and continuing through August.

Please wear a mask and social distancing will be practiced. You don’t want to miss out on this interesting and informative tour. Call 309-373-5080 to reserve your spot now. FREE (but donations always accepted).

Suzanne Hauberg
and the Tri-City Garden Club

In the summer of 1919, Miss Elizabeth Putnam invited a small group of women including Susanne Hauberg to her home to discuss the formation of a group that would promote good gardening practices in their own gardens and in the community.  The Tri-City Garden Club was formed.  Susanne was an active member for years hosting meetings, arranging programs, submitting entries to the garden shows and serving as the group’s president for several years.  Today the club remains active with an added focus on resource conservation and community beautification projects.  They have generously supported restoration work in our own Jens Jensen landscape while actively maintaining five public garden spaces and hosting an annual garden walk.

The June 29, 1931 Argus included a society note: “Susanne Hauberg extends an invitation to members of the Tri-City Garden Club to visit her rose gardens on the side hill west of the house anytime tomorrow.  Please use the entrance at 22nd Street and 13th Avenue, Rock Island.”
