The Haubergs believed that we can connect to nature even in our own yards, so they wanted the land surrounding their home to be a living landscape. They used plants that were native to the prairie lands in Illinois and combined these with some of their favorite flowers, trees and bushes. Walk through and enjoy the gardens and grounds, and as you do, be on the lookout for treasures!
Treasure Hunt 1 — Some bits of the old landscape are still there. Find the steps and verandas of the of the terrace garden, the cement foundation squares for grape arbor, the bridge, the letter H on a miller, and the lamppost that look like a tree.
Treasure Hunt 2 — There are SIX stones painted with tulip designs from the interior of the house that are hidden throughout the grounds. See if you can find all six.
Treasure Hunt 3 — There are small rocks painted with native plants hidden throughout the grounds. If you find one, try to identify it from the list below. Take a picture and share it on social media with #HaubergMansionRocks! Then hide it somewhere else on the grounds for another person to find.
Treasure Hunt 4 — As plants change with the seasons, which ones will you find on your quest? Click this link below to go to the complete treasure hunt page with photos of most of the plants and flowers you may see.
You can also find flyers with the complete explanation of the four treasure hunts, including 18 photos of plants and flowers that grow on the grounds. Click anywhere on this page to go to the Treasure Hunt Page.
